We had a wonderful dinner with friends at the Ashby Inn & Restaurant in Paris, VA recently. We have visited the restaurant several times and knew what to expect. We were not disappointed. The food and service was superb.

I began my dinner with an amazing crab cake in cherry vinegar.

For my main course I usually choose a steak because Chef Tarver King buys his beef from Martin’s Angus Beef. Having purchased their meat at our local farmer’s market it is exceptional. My dish was a rib loin of beef with potato confit, Swiss chard compote, stilton cream, and cocoa. It was cooked perfectly and covered with the wonderful stilton cream sauce.

My wife had the pork belly with okra and daylily.

I loved my dessert, a peanut ice cream with cashew & bacon brittle, croquant, crème fraîche, and honey.

My wife decided on the buttermilk sponge cake with rhubarb purée, sorrel gelato, cherries, and hyssop streusel. She found the rhubarb purée very refreshing.

The dining room was well lit and fairly quiet. We go early when it is not as busy to make it easier to hear. There is a large outdoor seating area for those who prefer the fresh air of the countryside. A three course meal for four, tea, coffee and two drinks was a little over $350, about what you would expect to pay at one of the higher rated restaurants in Northern Virginia. And well worth the price. As an added bonus Paris is located at the intersection of routes 50 & 17 and no matter from which direction you approach you are guaranteed a scenic drive.

Sunday Brunch with Friends

The Inn at Willow Grove

14079 Plantation Way
Orange, VA 22960
(540) 317-1206

This Sunday brought us together with a group of wonderful friends from the Charlottesville area to celebrate two birthdays. We have been to the Inn at Willow Grove before and were really looking forward to a return visit. We were not disappointed.

Arriving at the Inn you are greeted by a beautifully restored 18th century plantation house on a 40-acre estate in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

On our previous visit we were seated in the main dining room on the first floor. For this get together management was very accommodating to our need for access for a scooter and put our party of ten in a lower floor room which we had all to ourselves. I preferred this because without the noise of the larger dining room it was easier for everyone to talk and catch up.

Table at Inn at Willow Grove

Wonderful plates.

Image[5]

Brunch started with a delightful Almond Cinnamon Cake and Cinnamon Twist. The cake had tasty whole almonds and the perfect crumb cake type topping. I was a little surprised the Cinnamon Twist was dryer than it look, but still very much edible.

Image(1)

After cake we received a biscuit and sausage gravy appetizer that had a moist perfect small biscuit lightly covered with warm sweet sausage gravy. I could make a meal out of their sausage gravy and biscuits.

Image(2)

For my main course I chose the French Toast Brick. I had this on my last visit and it was too good to pass up on this trip. Not the type of French Toast you come across often. It is a cross between an eggy Texas Toast and coffee cake. About 2 inches high and 3 to 4 inches long it truly is brick like. It has a wonderful taste and consistency. Topped with a sugary coating, mascarpone cheese, blackberries, warm maple syrup and killer apple smoked bacon. This is such and great unique dish I fear I do not have the will power to order something else on future visits.

Image(3)

Others in our group ordered the Halibut with poached egg, tomato hollandaise, and roasted vegetable hash.

Image(4)

Tossed baby spinach, orzo pasta, capers, Holland tomatoes, toasted pine nuts, parmesan cheese, and blond balsamic vinaigrette.

Image(5)

My wife had the pork tenderloin with egg on an English muffin and black eyed peas. The pork tenderloin was melt in your mouth quality which almost tasted like ham. We both agreed the black eyed peas were incredible and the best we have ever tasted.

Image(6)

Breakfast sandwich of fried chicken, scrambled egg, lettuce, tomato, Swiss and American cheese, and herb aioli, on sourdough bread.

A portion of the grounds directly behind the Inn.

Also on the property is function space for wedding receptions and special events.

Guest often stay in small chic cabins behind the Inn.

A beautiful natural spring crosses the property and complements with outstanding landscaping.

Everyone in our party had a wonderful time, loved their dishes, and spoke of returning again soon. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and professional. I found the cost reasonable given the quality of the food and ambiance of the Inn. Our portion of the check was about $55 for two. You can see the menu and prices here. I can’t wait to go back and see if I can muster the strength to order something other than the French Toast Brick.

I am sure glad I had just eaten brunch before I saw this Maple Bacon Donut at the butcher shop in Middleburg. It sure looked good and was on sale too.

The Blue Rock Inn

12567 Lee Hwy, Washington, VA 22747 Phone: (540) 987-3388

We joined friends for brunch a few weeks ago in Sperryville, VA at the Blue Rock Inn. Things did not start off to well. When we arrived first and learned they did not have the reservation made by our friends it was too late to do anything other than wait to see if they showed up. There is no cell service at the restaurant so I had no way get phone numbers out of my cloud dependent phone to call and ask if we had the wrong day. Before long everyone showed up and it was time to eat.

I had one of my all-time favorites French toast. I prefer the larger Texas Toast style bread but the chef used thinner bread soaked completely through. The maple syrup was rich with a smooth taste. A little too much powdered sugar for my taste but over all a satisfactory dish.

2013-02-24 13.44.41

My wife chose Shrimp & Grits with potatoes and eggs. The stone ground grits were delicious and the shrimp was cooked perfectly.

2013-02-24 13.41.19

Several members of the group opted for biscuits and sausage gravy. The biscuit was just slightly hard or maybe just a little denser than I like. The sausage gravy was wonderful. Smooth with just the right spice taste. I like my home fries or hash browns on the crispy side and these were close. Cooked and not just heated up.

2013-02-24 13.41.05

Our group of six was seated in a room with one other occupied table which made it easier to talk over brunch. The restaurant uses coffee from the nearby Central Coffee Roasters and it was excellent. The food was moderately priced and a good value. We were disappointed when our server would not make separate checks for the two couples and two singles. Creating four checks is a borderline excessive request, but I have to believe management would rather guests leave thinking about the food and not what a pain in the ass it was to get the bill paid.

Dessert at Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop

222 Albemarle Street, Baltimore, MD 21202 – 410-685-4905

2012-12-27_14

A short walk from our wonderful lunch at Ciao Bella is Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop. Elizabeth had told us it was one of her favorite places for dessert. The bakery is divided into a front area serving customers picking up pastry as take out and a section offering seating for those wishing to have pastry and coffee immediately. We waited for a table to sit and enjoy our dessert.

2012-12-27_14

My wife and I split this wonderful vanilla and chocolate napoleon. It was one of the best I have had. And I have had some in New York that were very good. The dough was light and flaky with rich full flavored fillings. The serving was large enough for both of us especially after just finishing lunch.

2012-12-27_14

Elizabeth had the traditional canoli with a sweet and smooth filling. It was an excellent end to a great afternoon. The deserts are on the pricy side at about $26 and some change for 2 desserts, 3 coffees, and tip. But it was worth every penny.

Lunch at Ciao Bella

236 S HIGH ST, BALTIMORE, MD 21202 – 410-685-7733
A friend took us to lunch at the wonderful Ciao Bella restaurant in the Italian section of Baltimore. We were there during the week and sadly the restaurant was not that busy. Hopefully it was because many people were away for the holidays. It had nothing to do with the food, everything was really good. The restaurant is not big, maybe 20 tables in all. Noise was not a factor because we were the only ones in our section. The white table clothes gave it that familiar upscale Italian restaurant feel. Our waitress was friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
2012-12-27_13
We began with some shrimp and stuffed mushroom appetizers. Both were wonderful  For my main course I enjoyed the lasagna swimming in a rich tomato meat sauce. The sauce was every so sweet and just the right amount of meat. The portion was just the right size, filling but not so much we had to drag a doggie bag around until we got to the car.
2012-12-27_13
My wife had the Orange Roughy on a bed of risotto and raved about it.
2012-12-27_13
Our host Elizabeth enjoyed a seafood pasta she described as very good. I tasted a scallop and found it cooked perfectly.
2012-12-27_13
No dessert with lunch. We were off to Vaccaro’s down the street for pastry.

Cafe Torino

388 WATERLOO ST., WARRENTON, VA 20186 – 540-347-2713

This is a small family owned Italian restaurant and bakery open Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. The waitress was nice and took good care of us even though she was alone and waiting on about 8 tables. It is a small place so reservations are recommended. The fresh bread tasted like it was just out of the oven. I had a nice tortellini with prosciutto and ham in a cream sauce. My dish had more prosciutto than ham with the cream sauce at just the right consistency. My wife had wonderful lasagna with a strong meat sauce full of flavor.

Cafe Indigo – Sperryville

A drive in the county on a beautiful day with great friends brought us to the small town of Sperryville and Cafe Indigo at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cafe is located within River District Arts, a converted 1930s era apple packing facility housing a collection of galleries and art studios. Some great photos of the restaurant can be found on professional photographer Kristen Finn’s blog.

Cafe Indigo is a large, light, and airy space with a small bar and seating for about 50. The cafe is managed by the Thornton River Group, owners of the Thornton River Grill also in Sperryville. The management embraces the farm to table philosophy found at many great Virginia restaurants. The menu is determined by what is available from local farmers and changes often. The staff was professional and friendly and more than willing to put up with all my questions.

I ordered the BBQ Beef Burrito with rice, beans, and cheese. The burrito was delicious and heated perfectly, allowing me to eat it right after it arrived. I have been in some restaurants where a burrito is served so hot you have to stare at it for 5 minutes before you can even touch it. I was able to detect the hint of barbeque flavor but I would have preferred the flavor stronger. I know it can be easy to overdo it but I think someone who orders a BBQ Burrito is looking for that barbeque taste. Served with home-made pickles, it is one of the best burritos I have tasted.

2012-11-10_13

Two members of our party opted for the Cubano sandwich. Made with a spicy olive mixture in place of the traditional pickle it was another great sandwich. I am not a pickle person so I order my Cubano sandwiches without the pickle. I enjoyed the olive taste much better than a sandwich missing the pickle.

2012-11-10_13

The meal was relatively inexpensive given the quality of the food. The Cubano was the priciest item on the lunch menu at $12. The cafe is open for Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday brunch. Located about 25 miles southwest of Warrenton on Rt. 211 it makes a great weekend destination. In addition to viewing the art galleries and studios, Copper Fox Antiques and the Copper Fox Distillery are also on the property.

Volcano Hot Stone Grill

We had a delightful dinner with friends at the new Volcano Hot Stone Grill in Gainesville. We started dinner with salads and meatball soup. The soup was rich and creamy with tasty meatballs.

My main course was the Blueberry Chicken. It was cooked perfectly with just a hint of blueberry. The menu describes the dish as:

Panko and blueberry flour dusted chicken breast filled with a red wine mascarpone cheese. Pan seared, with a whole grain mustard beurre blanc served with mesclun greens, heirloom tomatoes and parsnips with a chardonnay vinaigrette.

Photo_3

Dessert was a wonderful Chocolet S’mores made with milk chocolate, graham cracker crumbs and mini marshmallows.

Our waitress Tammy was very knowledgable and attentive. The decor is modern with a high noise level. The hot stone grill concept is unique and entertaining. Several meat dishes are brought to the table seared on one side and cooking on a lava brick heated to over 500 degrees.

The entrees are moderatly priced. Two entrees, soups, teas and desserts came to just over $80 with tip. We are looking forward to going back soon.

Late Night at IHOP

-1382949684

IHOP Gainesville, VA

Let me say that by late night I mean 2130 hours. Late for us to be out eating on a week night.

I ordered the Pot Roast sandwich. It came with fries and was hot off the grill. Nothing fancy just solid good food. It is made with pot roast, caramelized onions, and cheese. I took what it came with for cheese which turned out to be American. I didn’t taste the onions that much but I didn’t miss them much anyway.

The fries seemed a little different this time. It seemed like they may have been dusted with salt, pepper, and a spice. They were probably the best I have had at IHOP. That is not saying much since I usually only order breakfast items here. I went with water to drink so nothing to report there other than it was cold thankfully.

They gave me the military discount of 10% since I am a disabled veteran. The whole thing cost us $14.91 for my wife’s dinner included. Not bad for grabbing something late.

Service was adequate.
