We joined friends for brunch a few weeks ago in Sperryville, VA at the Blue Rock Inn. Things did not start off to well. When we arrived first and learned they did not have the reservation made by our friends it was too late to do anything other than wait to see if they showed up. There is no cell service at the restaurant so I had no way get phone numbers out of my cloud dependent phone to call and ask if we had the wrong day. Before long everyone showed up and it was time to eat.
I had one of my all-time favorites French toast. I prefer the larger Texas Toast style bread but the chef used thinner bread soaked completely through. The maple syrup was rich with a smooth taste. A little too much powdered sugar for my taste but over all a satisfactory dish.
My wife chose Shrimp & Grits with potatoes and eggs. The stone ground grits were delicious and the shrimp was cooked perfectly.
Several members of the group opted for biscuits and sausage gravy. The biscuit was just slightly hard or maybe just a little denser than I like. The sausage gravy was wonderful. Smooth with just the right spice taste. I like my home fries or hash browns on the crispy side and these were close. Cooked and not just heated up.
Our group of six was seated in a room with one other occupied table which made it easier to talk over brunch. The restaurant uses coffee from the nearby Central Coffee Roasters and it was excellent. The food was moderately priced and a good value. We were disappointed when our server would not make separate checks for the two couples and two singles. Creating four checks is a borderline excessive request, but I have to believe management would rather guests leave thinking about the food and not what a pain in the ass it was to get the bill paid.
